Begin Kilimanjaro ascent through lush rainforest
Your 8-day adventure begins at Marangu Gate (1,860m) where you'll complete registration formalities. We start our ascent through the beautiful, dense rainforest on a well-maintained trail. The Marangu Route is known as the "Coca-Cola" route and is the only route that offers sleeping huts.
The trail climbs steadily through lush montane forest with opportunities to spot blue monkeys and various bird species. We'll ascend to Mandara Hut (2,700m), our comfortable accommodation for the night. The huts provide dormitory-style sleeping with basic amenities, offering more comfort than camping.
Trekking Time: 4-5 hours
Elevation: 2,700m
Accommodation: Mandara Hut
Ascend through heather and moorland zones
After breakfast, we continue our ascent, leaving the rainforest behind and entering the heather and moorland zone. The vegetation changes dramatically as we gain altitude, with spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak emerging.
We'll trek through beautiful alpine landscape with giant groundsels and lobelias. The trail is well-defined and relatively gentle as we ascend to Horombo Hut (3,720m). This larger hut complex serves as an important acclimatization point and offers stunning views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.
Trekking Time: 6-8 hours
Elevation: 3,720m
Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Approach base camp through alpine desert
Today we continue our ascent through the increasingly sparse alpine desert toward Kibo Hut. The landscape becomes more dramatic with spectacular views of the surrounding terrain. We pass the last watering point and prepare for our summit attempt.
We'll arrive at Kibo Hut (4,703m) in the afternoon, giving us time to rest and prepare for the midnight summit push. The hut accommodation here is more basic due to the high altitude, but it provides essential shelter from the elements. We'll have an early dinner and try to get some rest before the challenging night ahead.
Trekking Time: 6-8 hours
Elevation: 4,703m
Accommodation: Kibo Hut
Summit day - Reach the roof of Africa
We begin our summit attempt around midnight, trekking by headlamp through the darkness. The climb to Gilman's Point (5,685m) is challenging, but witnessing the sunrise from this vantage point is an unforgettable experience.
From Gilman's Point, we continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) - the highest point in Africa. After celebrating our achievement and taking photos, we descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut (3,720m) for the night. The descent is rapid but rewarding as we reflect on our incredible achievement.
Summit Trek: 6-8 hours
Descent: 4-6 hours
Maximum Altitude: 5,895m
Final descent and transition to safari
After a well-deserved breakfast, we begin our final descent through the moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate (1,860m). The trek down is much easier and faster than the ascent.
At Marangu Gate, you'll receive your summit certificates - gold for those who reached Uhuru Peak and green for Gilman's Point. We'll then transfer you back to your hotel in Arusha for a hot shower, celebration dinner, and a good night's rest before beginning your safari adventure the next day.
Descent Time: 5-7 hours
Elevation: 1,860m
Accommodation: Arusha Hotel
Begin your wildlife safari adventure
After breakfast, we depart Arusha for the world-famous Serengeti National Park. The journey takes us through the scenic landscapes of northern Tanzania, with a stop at the Ngorongoro Conservation Area viewpoint.
We enter Serengeti National Park and begin our game drive en route to our accommodation. The Serengeti is renowned for its vast plains, incredible wildlife density, and the Great Migration (seasonal). We'll have our first opportunities to spot lions, elephants, giraffes, and countless other species in their natural habitat.
Drive Time: 6-7 hours
Game Drives: Afternoon

Immerse in the ultimate wildlife experience
Today we have a full day to explore the endless plains of the Serengeti. We'll embark on morning and afternoon game drives, with a break for lunch at our accommodation. The Serengeti offers some of the best wildlife viewing in Africa.
Depending on the season, we may witness the Great Migration with thousands of wildebeest and zebra, or explore different regions of the park to find resident wildlife. We'll search for the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhino) and countless other species while learning about the ecosystem from our expert guide.

Find answers to common questions about climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and safari experiences.
The best time for the Marangu Route and Serengeti combination is during the dry seasons: January-March and June-October. January-March offers warmer climbing conditions with clearer skies, while June-October has excellent wildlife viewing with animals congregating around water sources. The Great Migration is typically in the Serengeti from December-July, with the river crossings occurring June-August.
The 5-day Marangu Route has a success rate of approximately 60-70%, which is lower than longer routes due to shorter acclimatization time. However, the hut accommodations provide more comfort than camping routes. For higher success rates, we recommend the 6-day Marangu option or considering longer routes like Machame or Lemosho if summit success is your priority.
The Marangu Route is considered moderate in difficulty and is the most gradual of all Kilimanjaro routes. However, the shorter 5-day itinerary makes it more challenging due to less acclimatization time. Good physical fitness is required, with regular cardiovascular exercise recommended for 2-3 months prior. The hut accommodations make it more comfortable but don't reduce the physical challenge of high-altitude trekking.
During the safari portion, we provide comfortable lodge or tented camp accommodation. Tented camps offer en-suite bathrooms, comfortable beds, and dining facilities while maintaining a authentic safari atmosphere. Lodges provide hotel-style comfort with swimming pools and additional amenities. The specific accommodation depends on availability and can be customized based on your preference and budget.
The Serengeti is home to an incredible diversity of wildlife. You can expect to see lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, cheetahs, hyenas, and numerous antelope species. The Great Migration (seasonal) features millions of wildebeest and zebra. Birdlife is also abundant with over 500 species recorded. While we can't guarantee specific sightings, the Serengeti offers some of Africa's best wildlife viewing.
Yes, this package can be customized in several ways: extend the Marangu Route to 6 days for better acclimatization, add Ngorongoro Crater to the safari, extend the Serengeti stay, add other parks like Tarangire or Lake Manyara, or include Zanzibar beach extension. We can tailor the itinerary to your preferences, fitness level, time constraints, and budget.
We use custom-built 4x4 safari vehicles with pop-up roofs for optimal game viewing. The vehicles accommodate maximum 6-7 passengers with window seats for everyone. They're equipped with refrigerators for cold drinks, charging ports for cameras and phones, and professional radio communication systems. Our vehicles are maintained to the highest standards for safety and comfort.
The Marangu Route is unique because it's the only route that offers sleeping huts instead of camping. It's often called the "Coca-Cola" route and follows the same path up and down the mountain. While it's more comfortable due to hut accommodations, the shorter duration makes acclimatization more challenging. It's the most popular route for first-time climbers seeking more comfort, but success rates are generally lower than camping routes with better acclimatization profiles.
The Kilimanjaro climb has a minimum age of 10 years old, and children should be physically fit and motivated. The safari portion is excellent for families and children of all ages. For families with younger children, we recommend focusing on the safari only or considering shorter hiking options rather than the full Kilimanjaro climb. We can customize family-friendly itineraries upon request.
If you cannot complete the climb due to altitude sickness or other reasons, our guides will ensure your safe descent. You'll still participate in the safari portion as planned. We recommend comprehensive travel insurance that covers trekking interruptions. While we make every effort to help clients summit safely, individual responses to altitude vary, and safety is always our priority.
